E-Therapy Helps Schools No Matter Your Opening Model
by Annmarie Iascone
Over the past two weeks, the news and social media has been flooded with guidance for reopening schools. Word came from President Trump, Vice President Pence, Education Secretary DeVos, and other senior administration officials who are strongly emphasizing the importance of safely reopening schools this fall. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “all policy considerations for the coming school year should start with a goal of having students physically present at school.”The problem is that not everyone agrees it is safe to do so. In fact, no nation has tried to send students back to school with the number of COVID-19 cases still so high.Regardless of which side of the fence you stand on, it is a nerve wracking time in education. Even with all the guidance recently released to school officials from the CDC on how to prepare for, prevent transmission of, and react quickly to coronavirus cases – there are still so many unknowns and what-ifs.A study done by the Kaiser Family Foundation shows that nearly a quarter of teachers have an underlying condition or are at an age that places them in a high-risk category for COVID complications. California’s two largest school districts announced just this week that they will be 100 percent remote, and they will only return to school when it is safe and appropriate to do so. Another of the nation’s largest district, NYC, announced a blended learning plan with students on campus for one to three days a week.
How does your district plan to return to school during Covid-19?
District leaders need to plan what they deem is the best course of action to keep their faculty/staff and their students/families safe and healthy. You also need to make sure the quality of learning remains on an upward trend; whether this means going back to school full-time, a hybrid program or 100% distance learning. We have been talking for weeks now about preparing for what’s to come. You need to prepare for just about every outcome that could possibly happen.
- Do I have enough teachers/therapists willing to come back to school?
- Do I have a plan in place if a parent wants to keep their child home even if school comes back?
- Do I have a plan in place if we are forced to go 100% remote again?
