Sharpening Your School-Based Skills This Summer: Simple Ways to Reset, Recharge, and Refocus

Whether you’re finishing your first school year as a provider or your fifteenth, summer offers something rare in our field: time to breathe, reflect, and refine. While the academic calendar can feel nonstop from August to May, these quieter months give clinicians a chance to pause and look at their work with fresh eyes.

It’s also the perfect moment to sharpen your school-based skills—whether that means better goal-writing, stronger collaboration, or smarter time management. Below are a few areas that tend to make the biggest difference for school-based clinicians, especially as you prepare to start a new year with intention.

Rethinking Goal-Setting for Real Progress

We all want the goals we write to be meaningful, measurable, and actionable—but that’s easier said than done when juggling compliance, caseloads, and changing student needs.

This summer, take a moment to ask yourself:

  • Are the goals I write actually guiding my sessions?
  • Do my goals reflect the real needs of the student—not just the IEP template?
  • Have I used data to shape my goals, and do I have a clear plan to track them?

SMART goals are more than a formality. When written well, they reduce ambiguity, provide direction, and help you advocate more clearly for your students. If it’s been a while since you revisited best practices in goal-writing, now’s a great time.

Resetting the Way We Collaborate

Strong school-based services are rarely delivered in isolation. Teachers, paras, administrators, and families are all part of the student’s support system—and learning how to work with them effectively can make or break your year.

Here are a few things to reflect on:

  • What tools help me communicate progress to non-clinical team members?
  • How can I set boundaries around my time while still being available for collaboration?
  • Are there common challenges I could preempt with a quick resource or template?

Building relationships with your school team takes time—but having a few go-to tools in place can make those partnerships stronger and smoother from the start.

Making Time Work For You, Not Against You

One of the most common challenges school-based clinicians report is time—or more accurately, the lack of it. Between sessions, documentation, travel (in-person or digital), and meetings, even the best-laid schedules can quickly fall apart.

Now’s the time to consider:

  • How am I currently organizing my week—and does it actually work?
  • Are there ways to batch similar tasks (like session planning or progress tracking)?
  • Could a template or checklist save me 15 minutes a day?

Small systems lead to big results. Creating a simple workflow now can save you hours during the school year—especially when caseloads get heavy or schedules shift.

A Fresh Start That Feels Grounded

New school years are full of possibility, but they can also bring stress and uncertainty. One of the best ways to enter the fall with clarity is to plan for the first month intentionally.

A few planning prompts:

  • What are my “first 30 days” must-do’s—beyond just showing up?
  • How will I introduce myself to teams and students in a way that builds trust?
  • What routines can I establish now that will carry me through the year?

The first few weeks set the tone. Use this time to think about how you want to show up—not just as a provider, but as a leader on your campus or virtual team.
