Back to School, Built to Last

What Special Education Teams Need From You This Year

The start of the school year brings fresh notebooks, sharpened pencils, and maybe even a little optimism. But for special education teams, it also brings packed caseloads, compliance deadlines, and the challenge of meeting complex student needs—often with limited time, staffing, or support.

This year, your leadership can shape more than just the first week. It can set the tone for everything that follows.

Whether you’re welcoming new hires or reconnecting with veteran staff, here are three ways to start strong—and build something that lasts.

  1. Protect Their Planning Time

The early weeks of school are often a blur—schedules shift, evaluations pile up, and everyone is pulled in five directions. That’s exactly why dedicated planning time matters most now.

Give your special education team protected time to meet, plan, and coordinate. Even just an hour together can make a major difference in how supported—and less overwhelmed—they feel.

Lead the way: Block off a shared hour on the calendar. Bring coverage if needed. It sends the message: “Your time matters.”

    1. Create Space for Honest Conversation

Your team might be walking in with energy—or walking in on empty. After years of change, it’s important not to assume. Ask how they’re doing. Ask what they need. Ask what would make this year feel different—in a good way.

You don’t need a formal survey. Just start the conversation.

Small moments, big impact: A hallway check-in or a quick team huddle can open the door to feedback you wouldn’t otherwise hear.

    1. Reconnect to the “Why”

At the start of the year, it’s easy to focus on the logistics—IEP deadlines, service minutes, compliance checklists. But the deeper purpose is never the paperwork. It’s the kids.

Take a moment this month to remind your team that their work changes lives. Celebrate even the smallest student progress. Point out moments where staff made a difference.

That’s the kind of culture that keeps people going—especially when things get hard.

Culture keeps people longer than compliance ever will.

You don’t have to have it all figured out.

But you can help your team start from a place of clarity, connection, and care.

And if you need a few more hands on deck this year, we’re here to help.
